So I wasn’t actually planning to write a post today on the best facial mask for aging skin, however just minutes after completing my weekly facial routine using my favourite facial mask, I just couldn’t resist sharing some information and suggestions with you. Here is a product review for you to consider and I will also share in this post how I prepped my skin for my facial as well as my follow up moisturizing routine that I used today (and yes, this is my scary looking clay face)
Clay For Your Skin
Several years back, my husband and I took a trip to Costa Rica. Aside from enduring some very hot, humid weather which was at times almost unbearable for my husband, it was a great vacation filled with adventure, interesting creatures, (I had a run in with fire ants…I lost that battle). It was in Costa Rica where I was introduced to clay baths and learned the myriad of benefits clay has on your skin.
Clay comes in various colours (green, white, yellow, red, pink, purple, blue) and each colour delivers a different set of benefits for your skin however all clay is renown for their detoxification and deep cleansing abilities for your skin. The benefits are many and if you haven’t tried a good clay mask you are missing out on a great at-home spa experience.
This product review is specifically on Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay which is natural calcium bentonite clay (green clay) from Death Valley, California. A cool fact is that this clay has been sun-dried for up to six months in temperatures that sometimes reach 134 degrees.
Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay – Pros and Cons
In terms of comparing this particular clay product to others on the market, Aztec in my view is a heavyweight. After using this product for over a year now, I can easily speak to the pros and cons based on my own results. (Let’s face it, I love it and over 16,000 others seem to love it too!)
- deeper clean
- more obvious skin tightening
- no fragrance
- no additives
- doesn’t leave your skin feeling dry
- 100% natural calcium bentonite clay
- cheaper than other brands on the market
- not tested on animals (this is a biggie for me)
- messy – keep that warm washcloth handy!
Using Clay as part of your Facial Routine
If you have decided to give this clay a try and make it part of your weekly facial routine, make sure you are giving the clay every opportunity to perform it’s magic. By this I mean, start with a clean, exfoliated face so that the clay can penetrate your skin and draw out impurities efficiently without having to fight through a layer of makeup and dead skin cells. Here is the routine I used on my self today which is often a typical routine for me and I find that it always leaves my skin completely clean, refreshed and tightened.
Step 1 – Cleanse your skin
Using your favourite skin cleanser that is targeted for your skin type (see my previous post Natural Skin Care Remedies), thoroughly wash your face to remove any residual makeup
Step 2 – Exfoliate
This step is critical because this will allow all of your dead skin cells to be sloughed off, leaving a fresh, renewed layer of skin that is ready for a good slathering of clay. For this step I used Bragg raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar (with the mother) and baking soda. Mix the two products together so you end up with a thick paste. Rub this paste gently on your skin and resist the temptation to apply too much pressure as this will leave your skin red and raw. The abrasiveness of the baking soda is sufficient and will do all the heavy lifting for you.
Step 3 – Apply Clay
I have tried several drugstore brands when it comes to clay facials and none of them have left my skin feeling as refreshed, cleaned and tightened as the brand – Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay. I was lucky enough to come across this product on Amazon one day and thought I would try it as it has tons of positive reviews.
I really can’t say enough about this product and one thing you will learn about my blog is that I will never promote a product that I truly don’t believe in just for the sake of making money. (No bull$#*& )
Another thing you need to know about me is that I only promote beauty products that are cruelty-free. Check out this link from Vegan Rabbit to see which companies test their products on animals. I think you will be surprised! (and not in a good way)
Back to your clay mask. Mix equal parts of the clay with the raw apple cider vinegar (make sure it is unfiltered and with the mother) and leave it on your face for about 10 minutes but NOT to the point where it has completely dried as this will have a reverse benefit and will draw out moisture. The optimal time for removing your clay mask is when it is still damp in some areas.
Step 4 – Moisturize that Lovely Clean Face!
Once you have removed your clay facial and you look in the mirror, you should be able to see fewer (if any) blackheads, tightened pores and a nice pink glow! While your face is still a bit damp from cleansing, apply your favourite moisturizer or serum. My choice of moisturizer today was a combination of castor oil and almond oil:
- 1/2 teaspoon castor oil
- 1/2 teaspoon almond oil
Since it is only midday when I pampered myself with this routine, I will let my skin enjoy this treatment until this evening when I go to bed and follow my Nightly Beauty Regimen.
I recommend that you make ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) a part of your daily beauty routine. It is also great as a salad dressing, adding 1-2 tablespoons to your water, or using it as a hair rinse to get rid of shampoo build up. There are SO MANY proven benefits to using ACV that it would take a dedicated post to adequately describe the goodness of it.
For me personally, this is my reliable at-home spa treatment for when I need a good deep facial cleansing and skin tightening treatment. It has made a big difference in the clarity and firmness of my skin and I hope you try it and it becomes part of your weekly facial routine.
If you are interested in purchasing the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay I have found you the best price on Amazon HERE. I will make a small commission if you purchase through this link however this does not affect the price you pay for it.
